Oil Springs Cultural Arts and Recreation Center (OSCAR)
Serves as a regional arts educational center. Classes include, spinning, weaving, quilting, pottery, woodcarving, painting heritage art, recycled art, dance, music and drama. Special activities and workshops are held at various times throughout the year but visitors are always welcome. Specific classes can be scheduled for tour groups. The Medina Garden Café is available for large group activities.

Frank “Hylo” Brown (1922-2003)
River, KY
Bluegrass Musician.  Nicknamed "Hylo" because of his vocal range, he launched his bluegrass career from Springfield, Ohio at the age of 18.  He debuted in 1958 with Capitol records with his band the 'Timberliners'.  He was a lead singer for Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs and the 'Foggy Mountain Boys'.  Brown was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry in 1959.  In later years he performed on his own, coming out with a number one hit, "Lost to A Stranger," which was later recorded by Ricky Skaggs.  His career spanned four decades.  He was a Kentucky Colonel and a member of the Kentucky Hall of Fame. Front Porch Pickin’, Johnson County
Every Thursday night around 6 pm local bluegrass musicians and fans gather at the Country Music Museum to share some great music.  The atmosphere is informal, relaxed and laid back.  Musicians and singers get together in the lobby, or outside if the weather is good, to jam and practice their craft.

Heritage Days
Takes place in September at the Mountain HomePlace at Paintsville State Park from 9-5pm.  Students and adults alike will receive live demonstrations and hands on opportunities of the local heritage artists with presentations and designs to teach the history and culture of the Appalachian People.

In the Pines Amphitheater
The "In the Pines Amphitheater" is located on the grounds of the Mountain HomePlace. It is built in the style of a Greek Amphitheater with capacity seating for 700. The amphitheater stage is in the design of an open barn. This combination of styles gives the amphitheater the feel of an ancient theater with the look of a modern open design. The natural acoustic sound provides the artist with a “natural sound system” unmatched in an indoor setting. The Red Bud Gospel Sing is held Memorial Day Weekend and hosts gospel singers from all parts of the United States. Various other shows are held throughout the year.

The Van Lear Town Celebration is an annual festival that is held during the first Saturday of August each year.  The celebration features old fashioned fun for the entire family.  Live music shows, games, food, crafts, a parade and much, much more!

U.S. 23 Country Music Highway Museum
U.S. Highway 23 is a designated National Scenic Byway in honor of the unprecedented number of country music entertainers who were born or lived along U.S. Highway 23. Route 23 is a major north/south route which stretches from Michigan to Florida, and is home to more than a dozen successful country musicians who call the green mountains of eastern Kentucky home.
